Critical Thinking, Criticism, Landscape Design

To continually improve our designs we require a method by which to evaluate the design in front of us, whether on a drawing table or on a screen: we need to think critically, to be self-critical.
This talk will discuss types of critical thinking as applied to landscape architecture, as well as the need for understanding the standards by which we evaluate our own work (being self-critical) as well as the work of others (criticism). Five landscapes from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries will demonstrate that there are many forms of criticism, and that the question lies in which ones apply to the particular situation.
