EVENT BACKGROUND AND THEME INTERPRETATION
Throughout the long course of human civilization, few landscapes have so thoroughly connected the three dimensions of economic livelihood, ecological wisdom and cultural belief as the relationship between tea and people. The Cultural Landscape of Old Tea Forests of the Jingmai Mountain in Pu'er, Yunnan Province, China, is the ultimate expression of this relationship. Centered on tea cultivation under forest canopy, and set within a landscape system composed of old tea forests, traditional villages and protective forest belts, the indigenous peoples who have long inhabited the area — including the Blang and the Dai — have sustained a millennia-old wisdom of growing tea beneath the canopy of tall trees while preserving the natural ecology to the greatest extent possible, forming a composite agricultural landscape in which production, ecology and daily life are highly coordinated. This symbiotic approach — drawing from nature without over-transforming it — has made the Jingmai Mountain the world's first World Cultural Heritage site themed on tea, offering a vivid Chinese illustration of a community of life for man and nature. The significance of the Jingmai Mountain lies in the way it both embodies and connects to numerous global issues concerning the common future of humanity. As a global beverage spanning East and West, tea culture carries the memory of trade networks and mutual learning among civilizations, and the Jingmai Mountain serves as a living example demonstrating the universal value of tea cultural landscapes as a vehicle of cultural diversity. Amid accelerating urbanization today, the rural landscape model of the Jingmai Mountain, which harmonizes production, ecology and daily life, provides a reference for the sustainable development of rural heritage worldwide. Moreover, as a landscape that is still growing, still being harvested for tea, and still hosting belief and daily life, the Jingmai Mountain also pushes the shared human question of how to safeguard living heritage to the forefront of academic inquiry. These issues concern not only China, but also the universal concerns commonly faced by all countries in the field of contemporary heritage conservation and management.
Against this backdrop, the symposium will focus its academic discussions on the following themes:
Value Recognition and Integrated Conservation of Rural Cultural Landscapes: Rural cultural landscapes are composite products shaped by the long-term interaction between people and nature, and their value extends far beyond physical space, embodying the knowledge systems, belief systems and livelihoods passed down through generations within communities. This theme seeks to explore how to establish mutually reinforcing governance pathways among value recognition, integrated conservation and community empowerment.
Conservation and Sustainable Development of Asian Tea Cultural Landscapes: Tea cultural landscapes constitute a worldwide heritage category that spans East and West and carries the memory of trade networks and mutual learning among civilizations. This theme will focus on how to establish a value framework for tea cultural landscapes that supports transnational dialogue; by comparing the experiences of tea-producing regions around the world, we hope to identify replicable and scalable global pathways that balance the conservation of the heritage itself, the monitoring of ecological health, and the support of sustainable community livelihoods.
Living Heritage Conservation and the Construction of Cultural Identity: Multi-ethnic regions are often areas where cultural diversity is concentrated, and where living heritage is most densely present. This theme will explore, in the context of multi-ethnic coexistence, how to help communities build and strengthen their cultural identity amid modernization while safeguarding cultural diversity, so that heritage conservation becomes a force that consolidates ethnic bonds and promotes social harmony, thereby offering experience and insights for heritage governance in multi-ethnic regions.
Digital and Intelligent Approaches to Cultural Landscape Conservation and Value Dissemination: Digital technologies are profoundly reshaping how heritage value is recognized, disseminated and taught. This theme will focus on how digital technologies can empower the interpretation, dissemination and public education of World Heritage cultural landscapes, and will explore pathways of transformation from professional conservation to public awareness, and from static display to interactive experience, so that heritage value can transcend geography and generations and be seen, understood and actively safeguarded by a broader public.
We hope that, taking China's World Heritage as a starting point and digital technologies as a bridge, researchers around the world may share the living experience of the Jingmai Mountain, that heritage value may be seen, understood and safeguarded by more people in the digital age, and that together we may explore a sustainable future for the coexistence of past and present in cultural landscapes worldwide.
